State-run telecom operator BSNL has introduced insurance benefits with two of its prepaid plans, offering accidental-death coverage of up to Rs 1 lakh and cyber-fraud protection of up to
Rs 10,000.
The insurance benefits are available with the STV 202 and STV 2449 prepaid plans and have been introduced in partnership with The Oriental Insurance Company Limited (OICL).
Subscribers do not have to pay a separate premium for the coverage.
The STV 202 plan offers 300 minutes of voice calls, 5GB of data and 100 SMS, while the STV 2449 plan comes with 365 days of validity, unlimited voice calling, 2GB of data per day and 100 SMS per day.
The cyber-fraud cover provides protection of up to Rs 10,000 for eligible losses when a subscriber's BSNL mobile number is linked to a bank account. The reported coverage includes losses arising from incidents such as theft of funds, phishing, and email spoofing.
The accidental insurance component provides coverage of up to Rs 1 lakh in the event of accidental death. The insurance benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of the policy issued by OICL.
BSNL introduced the insurance-linked plans on October 1, coinciding with the company’s Foundation Day. According to the available details, the insurance cover is activated after an eligible recharge, with policy information sent to the subscriber through SMS.
The initiative comes as telecom operators increasingly bundle additional services with prepaid plans. BSNL had earlier announced that the insurance offering would include cybercrime-related losses and would target customers in rural and semi-urban areas.
The new plans add insurance protection to selected BSNL prepaid connections, combining telecom services with coverage for specified accidental and cyber-fraud losses.
