Taiwan exports hit record on AI chip demand

Taiwan’s exports rose to a record monthly high in September, driven by strong global demand for artificial intelligence (AI) chips, semiconductors and other technology products, with the United States emerging as the leading export market.

Exports increased 60.9% year on year to $87.22 billion in September, according to Taiwan’s Ministry of Finance. The figure surpassed the previous monthly record of $82.4 billion set in August and exceeded economists’ forecast of 45.65% growth.

September marked Taiwan’s 35th consecutive month of year-on-year export growth, highlighting the continued strength of its semiconductor and technology manufacturing sector. Exports also rose 5.9% from August, according to the Finance Ministry.

The United States was the largest driver of export growth as demand for AI infrastructure and advanced computing components remained strong. Taiwan’s semiconductor industry has benefited from rising investment in data centres and AI computing capacity, strengthening demand for chips and related hardware.

The export surge comes alongside strong performance from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), the world’s largest contract chipmaker. TSMC reported third-quarter revenue of T$1.49 trillion ($46.71 billion), up 50% from a year earlier, with AI-related demand contributing significantly to the increase.

The latest figures underline Taiwan’s growing role in the global AI supply chain. Its semiconductor and electronics manufacturers supply chips and technology components used in advanced computing systems, servers and data-centre infrastructure.

The record export performance also highlights the resilience of Taiwan’s technology sector as companies worldwide continue to expand spending on AI infrastructure and computing capacity.
