Cyberattack on French Super markets causes millions in losses

A cyberattack targeting refrigeration systems at supermarkets across France has reportedly caused millions of euros in losses after hackers remotely manipulated temperature controls, leading to food spoilage and operational disruptions.

According to published media reports, the incident affected several major retail chains, including Intermarché, Netto, Carrefour, Monoprix, E.Leclerc and Coopérative U.

The attackers allegedly gained remote access to connected refrigeration systems and triggered defrosting cycles, causing temperatures inside some refrigerators and freezers to rise. The
disruption reportedly forced affected stores to discard perishable food products.

Commercial refrigeration equipment uses digital controllers to regulate temperatures and manage defrosting cycles. While remote access helps businesses monitor equipment across multiple locations, insufficient security protections can expose these systems to cyberattacks.

Reports have linked the affected refrigeration technology to Danish engineering company Danfoss. However, the precise method used by the attackers and the full extent of the incident
have not been conclusively established publicly.

The incident highlights how cyberattacks can affect physical business operations, not just computer networks and customer data. Connected industrial equipment used in retail, manufacturing and logistics can become a target when remote access is not adequately
secured.

Cybersecurity experts recommend strong authentication, restricted remote access, regular software updates and continuous monitoring to reduce risks to operational technology.
