US-based healthcare and pharmacy company Walgreens is set to establish its first Global Capability Centre (GCC) in India, with Chennai selected as the location for the new facility. The centre is expected to create more than 250 high-value employment opportunities during its first year of operations.

Walgreens India Private Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government on Friday for setting up the centre. The agreement was signed in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. The proposed GCC will be located at DLF Downtown in Taramani, along Chennai's expanding technology corridor.

According to the Tamil Nadu government, the centre will focus on technology and business services and is expected to expand its operations in the coming years.

The new facility is expected to support Walgreens' enterprise operations by developing technology and business capabilities from India. The company plans to use Chennai's skilled workforce as it builds out its operations, with further expansion planned beyond the initial hiring phase.

The development adds to Chennai's growing presence as a destination for Global Capability Centres. Companies are increasingly using GCCs for functions that extend beyond traditional back-office operations, including software development, technology services, research and development and other specialised business functions.

The Walgreens centre will also form part of Tamil Nadu's broader efforts to expand its GCC ecosystem.

The state has been promoting dedicated technology and employment corridors to attract multinational companies and create high-value jobs. With more than 250 positions expected in the first year and additional expansion planned, the Walgreens investment is set to add another international technology and business-services operation to Chennai's growing GCC landscape.
