AT&T has signed a multi-year agreement worth more than $3 billion with Corning to supply fiber and cable as the U.S. telecom giant expands its
network to meet rapidly rising data demand.
The agreement will support AT&T's plan to reach more than 60 million fiber locations by the end of 2030, expanding high-speed connectivity for homes and businesses across the United States. The company is preparing for increased network traffic as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, streaming and connected devices become more widely used.
AT&T said the average household using its fiber service now consumes more than 1 terabyte of data per month, roughly five times the level recorded in 2016. The company expects average monthly household usage to reach between 2 and 2.5 terabytes by 2030.
The growing demand is being driven by increasingly data-intensive online activities. Video streaming, cloud applications, online gaming and connected devices are placing greater demands on broadband networks, while AI services are creating additional requirements for high-capacity connectivity.
For Corning, the agreement provides a significant long-term supply commitment from AT&T. The company produces optical fiber and cable used by telecommunications providers to build and upgrade high-speed networks.
The deal is part of AT&T's broader infrastructure investment strategy. The company has said it plans to invest more than $250 billion over five years in U.S. connectivity infrastructure. AT&T has also expanded its fiber operations through its $5.75 billion acquisition of Lumen Technologies' fiber business.
The deal highlights the growing importance of fiber infrastructure as data consumption increases. As AI, cloud computing and other digital services continue to expand, telecom networks will face increasing demand for faster and higher-capacity connections.
