French artificial intelligence company Mistral AI is preparing to unveil a new AI model that CEO Arthur Mensch says outperforms Chinese competitors in certain areas, including cybersecurity.

Speaking at the Ai Everything conference in Abu Dhabi on October 6, Mensch said the model demonstrated capabilities that challenge the perception that European companies cannot compete with leading AI developers from the United States and China.

“The narrative that Europe cannot compete is something that is not true,” Mensch said, according to Reuters.

However, Mensch did not identify the Chinese models used for comparison or disclose the benchmarks and testing conditions behind the performance claim. The model’s name, technical specifications and independent evaluation results were also not established in the report.

Founded in France in 2023, Mistral has emerged as a prominent European contender in the global AI industry. The company competes with major US developers, including OpenAI and Anthropic, while also facing pressure from Chinese companies offering lower-cost AI systems.

Mistral has positioned itself as a European alternative, emphasising technological independence and giving businesses and governments another option for deploying AI.

The company raised €3 billion in a funding round in September 2026, reaching a post-money valuation of more than €21 billion, according to its official announcement.

Mensch said Mistral’s independence from the US and China was helping it expand in the Gulf and Asia-Pacific regions. He also highlighted growing demand for alternative technology suppliers.

The development comes as governments and businesses increasingly evaluate AI providers based on performance, cost, data governance and cybersecurity capabilities.

If Mistral’s claims are supported by transparent testing, the new model could strengthen Europe’s position in a market dominated by major US developers and increasingly competitive
