AMD has agreed to acquire World Labs, the artificial intelligence company co-founded and led by AI researcher Fei-Fei Li, in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $8.2 billion. The deal is part of AMD’s spatial intelligence, robotics and physical AI.

The transaction is expected to close by the end of 2026, subject toregulatory approval and other customary closing conditions. Following the completion of the transaction, Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting to AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su.

Following the acquisition, Li will join AMD as executive vice president and chief scientist, reporting directly to AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su.

San Francisco-based World Labs specializes in spatial intelligence, a field focused on helping AI systems understand and interact with the physical world. Its technology can generate, reconstruct and simulate interactive 3D environments using inputs such as text, images and video. The company is also developing technology for robotics and simulation.

AMD said World Labs’ research could help the company better understand the computing requirements of next-generation AI applications. As AI expands beyond traditional language models into reasoning, robotics and physical environments, new workloads are expected to place different demands on hardware and software.

The acquisition builds on an existing relationship between the two companies. AMD has previously invested in World Labs and worked with the company on optimising its spatial-intelligence workloads for AMD GPUs.br>
The deal also comes as AMD continues to compete with Nvidia in AI computing. By bringing World Labs’ researchers into its organization, AMD is expanding its focus from AI hardware toward the models and applications that could shape future computing needs.
