Elon Musk has said his artificial intelligence company SpaceXAI will be renamed SpaceXSI, adopting the term “Super Intelligence” in place of “Artificial Intelligence.”
Musk announced the proposed name change following US President Donald Trump’s recent push to use the term “Super Intelligence” when referring to advanced AI technologies.
The move comes as the Trump administration steps up its focus on advanced AI through the newly announced “Super Intelligence Force”, a federal task force created to coordinate the US government’s approach to the rapidly developing technology.
The proposed rebranding from SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI reflects the growing emphasis on superintelligence, a term generally used to describe AI systems that could eventually exceed human capabilities across a broad range of tasks.
Musk has been a prominent figure in the global AI race and has repeatedly highlighted the potential of increasingly advanced AI systems. His AI business is also involved in developing large-scale AI models and infrastructure.
The change in terminology comes as the US government and technology companies increasingly focus on the next generation of AI systems, with discussions around AI safety, cybersecurity, national security, regulation and technological leadership gaining prominence.
Trump's administration has said its new Super Intelligence Force will examine both the opportunities and risks associated with advanced AI and provide recommendations on the federal government's role in the technology.
Musk's proposed SpaceXSI branding could further reflect the industry's shift toward the concept of superintelligence as AI development moves beyond today's generative AI systems.
The proposed renaming also highlights how terminology around advanced AI is evolving as governments and technology companies compete to shape the next phase of the technology.
