IBM and the Sarawak Artificial Intelligence Centre (SAIC) in Malaysia are planning to establish a quantum-safe centre to help organisations prepare for cybersecurity risks posed by advances in quantum computing.

The proposed centre will focus on helping businesses identify vulnerabilities in their existing cryptographic systems and prepare for the transition to post-quantum cryptography, which is designed to withstand attacks from future quantum computers.

According to IBM’s announcement on October 6, the initiative will bring together research, industry engagement and cybersecurity expertise to support organisations in assessing their exposure to emerging threats and developing migration strategies.

As part of the planned initiative, IBM intends to use its Guardium Cryptography Manager to help organisations discover cryptographic assets, assess potential risks and prioritise remediation efforts. The partners also plan to develop frameworks to support the adoption of post-quantum cryptography and promote awareness and skills development.

Quantum computing could eventually threaten some of the encryption methods currently used to protect sensitive information. Although large-scale quantum computers capable of breaking widely used encryption are not yet a practical threat, organisations are increasingly preparing for the possibility that existing cryptographic standards may need to be replaced.

The proposed centre is expected to support research, customer engagement and collaboration on quantum-safe security, with a focus on helping organisations strengthen their long-term cybersecurity readiness.

The announcement reflects growing interest in post-quantum cryptography as governments and businesses assess how to protect sensitive data against future advances in computing.

The centre is being planned by IBM and SAIC; the announcement does not establish that the facility is already operational.
