TRAI maps real-world network speeds with new Anubhav platform

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has launched Network Anubhav, a geospatial dashboard that allows consumers to check mobile and fixed broadband performance by location.

The platform combines user-submitted test results with TRAI’s independent drive-test data to provide a broader view of network performance.

Launched on November 4, Network Anubhav uses consumer data from TRAI’s MySpeed and MyCall applications. Users can check download and upload speeds by telecom operator and technology, see where tests were conducted and compare connectivity across locations such as homes and workplaces.

The dashboard also displays call-quality ratings submitted through MyCall and provides access to telecom operators’ coverage maps.

Network Anubhav uses percentile measures to present user-test results.

P50 represents the median speed, meaning half of the recorded tests achieved or exceeded that speed. For mobile broadband, the platform uses P80, while P90 is used for fixed broadband. These represent speeds achieved or exceeded in 80 per cent and 90 per cent of tests, respectively.

TRAI has clarified that consumer-generated measurements do not provide a complete assessment of network quality under standard testing conditions. However, when combined with independent drive-test results, they can provide useful information about how networks perform in different areas.

The regulator said greater participation through its apps would help improve the dashboard’s coverage and usefulness.

Telecom service providers can also access a secure interface containing anonymised information on call quality, network coverage and internet tests, along with location and technical details. This can help operators identify areas that require further investigation and network improvement. Eligible third-party applications can also integrate connectivity tests through TRAI’s MySpeed software development kit.

Network Anubhav also brings Do Not Disturb (DND) services to a web interface. Consumers can set preferences for commercial communications, report unsolicited calls and messages, track complaints and view complaint details by service provider.
