Apple Pay has officially launched in India, giving eligible iPhone and Apple Watch users a new way to make contactless card payments at supported
locations. The service can also be used for payments in participating apps
and on websites that support Apple Pay.
At launch, Apple Pay supports eligible Visa and Mastercard credit cards issued by Axis Bank, according to the India rollout reported by The Times of India. The initial availability is limited, meaning customers with unsupported cards or cards from other banks will need to wait for their card issuer to add support.
Setting up Apple Pay in India is straightforward. On an iPhone, users can open the Wallet app, tap Add Card and follow the on-screen instructions. Users can scan an eligible card with the iPhone camera or enter the card details manually. The issuing bank may ask for additional verification before the card is activated for Apple Pay.
Apple Watch users can add a supported card through the Watch app on their paired iPhone. After the card is verified, it can be used for eligible contactless payments with the Apple Watch.
At supported stores, customers can use Apple Pay at contactless payment terminals. Depending on the device, transactions can be authenticated with Face ID, Touch ID or a device passcode.
Apple Pay is also available in participating apps and websites where the service is offered as a payment option. However, availability depends on whether the merchant, payment provider, card network and card issuer support Apple Pay.
Apple has built security features into Apple Pay to help protect payment information. Instead of sharing the user's actual card number with the merchant, Apple Pay uses a device-specific Device Account Number and a transaction-specific security code to process payments.
For Indian users, card and bank support will remain an important factor in how widely Apple Pay can be used. An Apple device alone does not guarantee access to the service; users need an eligible card from a participating issuer.
The launch gives eligible Apple users in India another option for making card-based contactless payments. Wider adoption of Apple Pay in India will depend on support expanding to more banks, card issuers, cards and merchants.
