The GDC Festival of Gaming 2026 concluded today, March 13, at the Moscone Center in San Francisco after five days of sessions, exhibits, announcements, and award ceremonies. This year’s event was the first to carry the rebranded ‘GDC Festival of Gaming’ title, reflecting a deliberate expansion of the event’s scope beyond its historical core of game programming and production to encompass the full ecosystem of the modern games industry — including business, marketing, audio, art, monetisation, international publishing, and emerging technology. The festival hosted over 700 cross-disciplinary sessions from 1,100 speakers, attracted more than 300 exhibitors, and drew approximately 20,000 industry professionals from across the world. Five distinct neighbourhood areas were introduced on the Festival Hall floor: Game Development, Future Tech, Indie and Education, International, and Monetisation and Player Engagement. A new News and Demo Stage hosted press briefings from Google Play, Razer, Limited Run Games, and Snail Games. The three headline technology announcements that dominated GDC 2026 discussion were: Microsoft’s official revelation of Project Helix, the next generation Xbox console-PC hybrid, delivered by Vice President of Next Generation Jason Ronald; Google DeepMind’s live demonstration of Genie 3, a generative AI system capable of producing navigable 3D worlds from text prompts alone; and Valve’s additional details on its Steam Machine Verified program, which establishes certification standards for games on the upcoming Steam Machine hardware. GDC Executive Director Mark DeLoura described the themes dominating conversation at the event as the ethical and productive use of AI, the emerging platforms of the next generation, and career navigation in a turbulent industry. GDC will return to the Moscone Center next year on March 1-5, 2027.
