Two competing but complementary open standards for AI-powered shopping are reshaping how consumers discover and purchase products — and together they represent the most significant structural change to e-commerce since the invention of online shopping itself. The first is Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), announced January 11, 2026 at the National Retail Federation annual conference in New York. UCP is an open standard co-developed by Google with Shopify, Walmart, Target, Etsy, and Wayfair that allows AI agents to complete an entire shopping journey — from product discovery to checkout to post-purchase support — without the customer ever leaving the AI interface. More than 20 companies have endorsed UCP, including Best Buy, Home Depot, Macy’s, Mastercard, Visa, Stripe, PayPal, American Express, and Zalando. UCP is already live in Google’s AI Mode search and the Gemini app for eligible U.S. retailers. The second standard is OpenAI’s Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), which launched in late 2025 in partnership with Stripe. ACP powers ChatGPT’s Instant Checkout feature, which allows users to buy directly from Etsy sellers and over one million Shopify merchants — including Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx, and Vuori — inside ChatGPT conversations. More than 700 million people use ChatGPT each week. Traffic from AI platforms to e-commerce sites surged 4,700% year-over-year in 2025, according to Adobe. During the 2025 holiday season alone, traffic to retail sites from ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity increased by approximately 700% year-on-year. Amazon, notably, did not join either UCP or ACP, instead developing its own proprietary AI shopping ecosystem within its platform — including the Rufus AI assistant, Alexa+, and a Buy for Me agent. Industry analysts say this creates a three-ecosystem retail world: Google/UCP, OpenAI/ACP, and Amazon’s proprietary infrastructure.
