Shapoorji Pallonji Group chairman Shapoorji Pallonji Mistry has welcomed the Reserve Bank of
India’s decision on Tata Sons and reiterated his support for the company’s public listing.
In a statement, Mistry said the RBI’s rejection of Tata Sons’ request to surrender its registration
provides clarity on the company’s regulatory obligations. Tata Sons has been classified as an
Upper-Layer NBFC under the RBI’s Scale-Based Regulatory Framework, making it subject to
the prescribed compliance requirements.
Mistry said a public listing would bring greater transparency and accountability to Tata Sons, while also improving visibility for shareholders and supporting the long-term philanthropic work of the Tata Trusts.
The Shapoorji Pallonji Group holds around 18.4% of Tata Sons. Mistry said the listing should not be viewed as a contest between stakeholders, but as an opportunity for greater cooperation among Tata Sons, the Tata Trusts, shareholders and the Shapoorji Pallonji Group. He also highlighted areas including semiconductors, artificial intelligence, advanced manufacturing, aviation, defence, digital technologies, energy and strategic infrastructure as important sectors for India’s future.
Mistry said the relationship between the Tata and Shapoorji Pallonji groups dates back more than a century and called for deeper engagement between the two institutions.
He also expressed support for the Tata Trusts’ philanthropic role and said he hoped the Trusts would grow their philanthropic capacity over the coming years. Mistry said the Shapoorji Pallonji Group was ready to work constructively with Tata Sons and the Tata Trusts. He said the focus should remain on transparency, accountability, cooperation and the long-term interests of the institutions involved.
