US stock futures rose on Wednesday, October 21, as SpaceX’s first reported profit as a public company and an upbeat forecast from Super Micro Computer renewed investor interest in artificial intelligence (AI) stocks.

Nasdaq 100 futures led the gains, rising 0.50% in premarket trading, while S&P 500 futures advanced 0.24%. The recovery followed a recent sell-off in AI-linked stocks as investors questioned whether heavy spending on data centres and computing infrastructure would generate sufficient returns.

SpaceX shares climbed 9.4% in premarket trading after Chief Executive Elon Musk said a potential merger with Tesla would be a good idea. The company also reported its first profit as a publicly traded business. Tesla shares gained 1.7% as investors assessed the potential implications of closer ties between the two companies.

Super Micro Computer provided another boost to the AI hardware sector. Shares of the server manufacturer jumped 12.7% after it forecast quarterly revenue and profit margins above Wall Street expectations, signalling resilient demand for AI servers and computing infrastructure.

The positive sentiment extended to other technology companies. Server makers Hewlett Packard Enterprise and Dell Technologies each gained more than 4% in premarket trading. Chipmakers Nvidia, Intel and Advanced Micro Devices also advanced as investors reassessed demand for AI computing capacity.

However, the rebound was not universal. Netflix shares fell more than 6% after the streaming company issued a weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter profit forecast, highlighting how company-specific results continued to influence market sentiment.

Investors were also awaiting quarterly results from Tesla and Meta Platforms for further indications of how major technology companies plan to invest in AI and whether those investments can deliver sustainable returns.

The latest gains underscore the influence of corporate earnings and business forecasts on AI-linked stocks. While demand for computing infrastructure remains a key growth driver, investors continue to scrutinise profitability, valuations and the substantial spending required to sustain the AI boom.
