For every question you type into an AI chatbot, a measurable amount of electricity is consumed — and researchers have now quantified exactly how significant that is. Studies estimate a single generative AI query consumes roughly ten times the electricity of a conventional Google search. Scaled across hundreds of millions of daily interactions, the aggregate energy footprint of AI has become one of the most urgent sustainability challenges in the technology sector. The International Energy Agency forecasts that data centre electricity demand will more than double by 2030, reaching the equivalent of Japan’s entire national electricity consumption. Researchers are calling for a standardised AI energy label — similar to the energy ratings on household appliances — so consumers can make informed choices about the tools they use.
