Apple has introduced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, putting a stronger emphasis on camera control, sustained performance and artificial intelligence. The new Pro models bring Apple’s first variable-aperture iPhone camera, the A20 Pro chip and a more capable version of Siri.
Rather than focusing only on higher specifications, Apple is giving users more control over how they capture photos and videos while making AI a bigger part of the everyday smartphone experience.
Camera becomes the centerpiece
The most noticeable hardware change is the new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture.
Until now, iPhone users largely relied on the camera’s software and computational photography to determine how an image should look. The new system introduces physical aperture adjustment, allowing the camera to change how much light enters the lens.
There are four aperture settings, giving users the option to priorities low-light performance, background separation or greater focus across a scene.
Apple has also added Pro Controls to the Camera app. Users can manually change aperture, shutter speed and white balance, while a histogram provides an additional way to monitor exposure.
This could make the Pro models more appealing to photographers and creators who want greater control instead of relying entirely on automatic camera settings.
Apple wants to make edited images easier to verify
The company has also introduced Apple Reference Image, addressing a problem that is becoming increasingly important as AI-generated imagery becomes more common.
When enabled, the iPhone can capture signed information from the camera sensor along with the photograph. Apple says this information can be used to create a reference version that can be compared against the finished image.
The idea is relatively straightforward: give users an additional way to check whether an image has been modified after it was captured.
For journalists, photographers and other professionals dealing with digital images, such technology could become particularly useful as distinguishing real photographs from AI-generated or heavily edited images becomes harder.
Apple is also working with image metadata and the SynthID standard as part of its broader approach to identifying AI-generated or modified content.
A20 Pro is built for longer workloads
The new A20 Pro is another major component of the upgrade.
Apple says the processor delivers improvements in computing and AI workloads, but the company has also worked on keeping the chip performing at high levels for longer.
A redesigned vapor-chamber cooling system is being used to control heat during demanding tasks. Apple claims this can deliver up to 40% higher sustained performance compared with the previous generation.
For users, the benefit is less about a benchmark number and more about maintaining performance during activities such as gaming, video editing and intensive AI processing.
The phones also feature Apple’s N1 wireless chip, with support for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread, along with the C2 cellular modem.
Pro Max targets heavy users with longer battery life
Battery endurance is another major part of Apple’s pitch.
The company rates the iPhone 18 Pro for up to 36 hours of video playback, while the Pro Max can reach up to 45 hours in eSIM-only configurations.
Apple has also improved charging speeds, claiming that the iPhone 18 Pro can reach 50% battery capacity in around 15 minutes with compatible wired charging.
Siri becomes more deeply connected to the iPhone
Apple is also making a larger push into AI with Siri AI.
The new Siri is designed to understand more about what the user is doing on the device rather than simply responding to isolated voice commands.
It can work with personal information such as messages, emails and photos and can understand information displayed on the screen. Apple is also bringing camera-based intelligence into the experience, allowing Siri to identify or provide information about objects and scenes viewed through the camera.
The AI processing is split between the device and Apple’s Private Cloud Compute infrastructure, depending on the task.
Dynamic Island gets a smaller redesign
The Dynamic Island has also been redesigned on the new Pro models.
Apple says the updated version occupies less space while being able to display three Live Activities at the same time. Face ID continues to handle authentication, device unlocking and secure transactions.

Apple is offering the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy.
In India, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at ₹1,64,900. Pre-orders will open on September 12 at 5:30 PM IST, with sales beginning September 18.
Why the iPhone 18 Pro matters
The bigger story behind the iPhone 18 Pro isn’t simply another processor or camera upgrade.
Apple is combining physical camera controls, computational photography, AI and image-authentication technology in the same device.
