AWS and Google Cloud End the Hyperscaler Turf War — Launch Joint Multicloud Networking That Microsoft Azure Will Join in 2026

Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud announced at AWS re:Invent 2025 in Las Vegas the launch of a joint multicloud networking product — combining AWS Interconnect-multicloud with Google Cloud’s Cross-Cloud Interconnect. The collaboration allows enterprise customers to connect AWS and Google Cloud environments through a unified, cloud-native experience rather than manually establishing connections between the two platforms. The initiative — described as being currently in preview — represents a significant shift in competitive posture: AWS and Google Cloud have historically competed aggressively for enterprise cloud share, and this collaboration marks the first time two of the world’s three largest cloud providers have built a joint infrastructure product. Microsoft Azure has been confirmed as a planned addition to the multicloud networking product in 2026. Salesforce endorsed the initiative, with SVP of software engineering Jim Ostrognai describing how Salesforce is using the AWS-Google partnership to build critical bridges between the two cloud platforms. Analysts at Forrester noted that AWS is effectively using its dominant market share to pressure the industry toward adopting a standard that, while open, reflects AWS’s technical architecture — positioning it as a de facto standard for cloud interoperability. The UK Competition and Markets Authority had separately concluded an investigation into the cloud market in August 2025, while the European Commission announced its own review into the market dominance of AWS and Microsoft, which together hold approximately 80% of the global cloud market. The multicloud networking launch is widely viewed as a response to regulatory pressure on hyperscalers to improve interoperability.
