Amazon has cut up to 250 jobs in its Devices and Services division, primarily affecting software development roles, as the company continues
to expand its consumer hardware portfolio, including Kindle e-readers, tablets and Alexa-powered devices.
The job cuts were reported on October 28, 2026, following several weeks of product announcements. Amazon confirmed the reductions after an inquiry from Reuters, citing the need to improve operational efficiency and align staffing with its product roadmap.
“We’ve made the difficult decision to eliminate a small number of roles,” an Amazon spokesperson told Reuters, without providing further details. Employees were reportedly notified through text messages and emails early Wednesday. In a message reviewed by Reuters, Cherie Robinson, a human resources vice president in the Devices and Services division, said an organisational review had led to the decision.
The workforce reduction comes as Amazon continues to introduce new consumer devices. The company has recently unveiled Kindle e-readers and tablet computers. On October 28, it also announced an Alexa-powered alarm clock and a photo frame.
Amazon has not directly linked the job cuts to these product launches. Its stated reasons focus on improving efficiency and aligning staffing levels with planned products and services.
The latest reductions follow a separate round of job cuts earlier in October, when Amazon reportedly eliminated approximately 1,000 positions in its core retail division. The two rounds affect different business units, with the latest cuts concentrated in Devices and Services.
The developments highlight the contrast between Amazon’s continued hardware launches and its decision to reduce staffing in the division responsible for developing and supporting its devices and related services. The company has not disclosed a detailed breakdown of the roles affected.
